What story will you tell? #TravelTuesday

by

Where would you travel if you had the chance?  Anywhere at all?  Grab a globe, close your eyes, point and go? Or do you have a dream of someplace specific?  Do you want to see the Great Wall?  Or the Swiss Alps?  Visit the beach in Ortona, Italy to pay silent tribute to a loved one?  Maybe you just want to hop in the car and drive a few hours to a secluded lake.

Ever since reading “Eat Pray Love” I’ve been dying to spend months in Italy eating way too much pizza and pasta, (and of course learning Italian and dolce far niente – the sweetness of doing nothing!) followed by finding my inner peace and purpose meditating in an ashram in India.

“Travel.  It leaves you speechless and turns you into a storyteller.”

While these two phrases seem contradictory, they could not hold more truth.  I’ve had my breath taken away by the beauty of the mountains and the vastness of the ocean.  I’ve seen the world from the sky, coasting over a patchwork of fields and bodies of water.  Felt the thrill of feeling the touchdown on a foreign soil, knowing adventure waits beyond the gate (I love arrivals gates, don’t you?).  I have experienced moments where words fail to express the magnitude of what I’ve seen, yet I have come home bursting at the seams with stories of the places I’ve been, the memories I’ve made and the people I’ve met along the way.  Memories engraved onto the very core of my being.

How amazing it would be to travel the world.  Some of us will have the chance to climb mountains, sail the ocean, experience cultures unlike our own (yet somehow, touchingly similar) and some of us will only see the world through photographs, living vicariously through those who have gone before us and hearing accounts of what lies beyond our own backyard.  May wherever life takes you leave you speechless with a story to tell and memories to be engraved.

Travel Gifts

Globe gifts are popular choices to help remember your travels.  But any gift can be a momento of your travel adventures if the simple memories are not enough.  Frames to hold the awesome photos, pendants, and dog tags engraved with your travel co-ordinates are all great options to keep the memories of your travels alive.

This frame is PERFECT for a girls weekend trip for example.

OR are you looking for something that is EXTRA special and out of this world? This levitating globe is not like any other gift you have ever given!

Expressions of Love for Valentine’s Day

by

“One is loved because one is loved. No reason is needed for loving.” ― Paulo Coelho

I am, hands down, a hopeless romantic.  It takes literally nothing to get my little heart pitter-pattering, so when holidays like Valentine’s Day come around, my sensitive inner-self makes a full blown appearance.  Call me sappy…and well, that would be incredibly accurate. I’ve talked about nostalgia before and Valentine’s Day is no different.  I can remember way back in grade school decorating pouches to be hung on the side of our desks that would eventually be filled with valentines from our class mates.  It was imperative to have adorable, likely Barbie-themed cards, to hand out to everyone.  When I lived at home my mom had a tree in the corner of our kitchen (ok, realistically it was a dead branch standing upright that resembled a tree in winter), and during the month of February each year we would write love notes of sorts to each other on colourful construction paper hearts and hang them on the tree.  And oh, the candy hearts with things like “Be Mine” written on them that you usually spent more time reading than eating…and that now say things like “Text Me”…sigh…such a simpler time…but I digress.

There is much folklore regarding the origin of Valentine’s Day but the day first became associated with love in 18th century England, evolving into an occasion when lovers offered gifts to each other, usually flowers, confectionery and greeting cards.  And now here we are in 2018 and the holiday is still as celebrated as it was then.

The beauty of Valentine’s Day, as it is with most gift-giving holidays, is that sometimes the simplest gift can mean the most.  A keychain engraved with coordinates of where you met, a personalized picture frame holding a captured memory, a bracelet bearing initials or a special date. I’ve seen all sorts of gifts, each with their own way of saying ‘I love you.’  I remember once I engraved the back of a pocket watch with “You’re My Lobster” (pleeeeease tell me you got the Friends reference?).  Another one of my favourite requests has to be “You’re My Person,” forever an iconic pop-culture reference to Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang proving that best friends can be soul mates.

I love love. Honestly, this is one of the biggest reasons I love working at Things Engraved.  Every day I get to engrave gifts given in love from one person to another.  A mother to a daughter, a husband to a wife, a friend to her bestie, a grandson to his grandmother.  The list goes on and on.  In a world like this, when we often hear and see so much hate, it’s a refreshing reminder that, to quote one of my favourite movies, “Love, actually IS all around.”

Brace yourself, because this is going to take sentimental to the next level.  Are you ready?

Don’t wait for a reason.  If there’s love in your heart, give it away.  Not just on Valentine’s Day, but every day.

Here are a few beautiful gifts purchased by our customers recently. We think they are the perfect inspiration for you to express your love for someone on an engraved keepsake gift.

Engrave a Heart for Heart & Stroke

Love will find a way through paths where wolves fear to prey. – Lord Byron

I really like this quote because while many think of Valentine’s Day as a ‘romantic’ love occasion, LOVE is so much more than that. Yes, we do love our romantic partners, but also our family, friends, customers, communities and more. But love is hard sometimes – whether it is because of distance, misunderstandings, or life’s stresses and challenges (the ‘wolves’), loving someone is not always easy.

Which makes it even MORE important to express and celebrate love, and let love inspire us all to make a difference, both personally and for others.

And that is what we want to do this year for Valentine’s Day.

Not only do we want to help YOU to give a beautiful, personalized keepsake gift to someone special for a celebration of love, but we also want to help solve one of the biggest  ‘wolves’ that threaten our loved ones – heart disease and stroke.

Until February 14th, we are asking our customers to partner with us to help raise money in support of The Heart & Stroke Foundation by engraving a filled heart onto their gifts. We will donate 50% of the engraving cost of the heart! Our goal is to raise $10,000 by February 14!

Not only can you show your heart to your loved one, but together we can show our heart to the world and to those impacted by heart disease and stroke.
