Last-minute shopping for the holidays

It’s less than 10 days til Christmas, and you’ve just barely made it through half of your holiday shopping list. The panic may have set in and you might be worrying that you just don’t have enough time to get everything done.

This is a common scenario around the holidays. Shoppers have the best intentions to get their gifts early, but whether because of work obligations or social events, the task seems to get pushed further and further into December. Soon many are staring down the calendar experiencing sweaty palms.

For the scores of shoppers who wait until the last possible minute to shop, there are ways to survive and surprise friends and family with great gifts.

At Things Engraved, you can choose gifts in our stores, and do other shopping or run errands while you wait for the engraving to be done. This is multi-tasking at its finest! How  about these great last minute gift ideas:

Here are a few more suggestions:

* Gift cards: They may not have sentimental meaning behind them, but gift cards are fast and easy. Chances are you can run into a store and be out with a handful of gift cards in less than 15 minutes, depending on lines at the checkout counter. Things Engraved offers gift cards that can be used in any of our stores across Canada. Making it the perfect choice for family from near or far.

* Food and beverages: While everyone is heading to the mall in droves, you can be stepping inside of a gourmet food or spirits store. Splurge on fine cheeses or that trendy bottle of liquor that a gift recipient has mentioned but not yet purchased for him- or herself.

* Magazine subscription: A magazine subscription is an easy fix as a last-minute gift. Purchase one copy of the magazine at the newsstand and wrap it up nicely. Put a note that a year’s worth of this periodical is on the way. No one will suspect that the gift was a last-minute thought.

* E-certificates: Retailers like music or book sellers will e-mail a gift certificate code to the person of your choice on a selected date. For those who are never without an e-reader or mp3 player, digital gifts could fit the bill.

* Gas card: It may sound funny and tacky, but a gas card from a brand-name station is a universally acceptable gift for anyone who drives regularly. With fluctuating gas prices, filling up the tank can be an expensive venture. Having a pre-paid gift card can help.

Waiting until the last minute for shopping can induce some anxiety. But knowing about easy gifts for procrastinators can take the stress out of this type of shopping.

Decorate Your Christmas Tree Like a Pro

Whether you’re using a real Christmas tree or a fake one this year, there is a “professional” way to decorate it. Now, don’t get me wrong… there is no “proper” way to decorate your tree, so if you have a preference for how you like to decorate, then by all means, decorate ‘til your hearts content!

However, IF you want to decorate your tree LIKE A PRO, here are the steps:

Step 1: Make sure your tree is nice and full. Purchase/cut down a lovely real one, or make sure your fake one is “fluffed”. Spend some time separating each bristle on the branches, if they bend.

Step 2: If your tree is not pre-lit, then this is the time to add your lights. Start from top-to bottom, making sure your plug is accessible. Make sure to tuck the cords in when you add a new strand of lights.

Step 3: If you have any garland, now is the time to add it. I prefer not to add garland or tinsel on my trees, but this is a personal preference.

Step 4: Start with your biggest decorations, your “core-elements”. A good idea would be to add large ribbon bows, feather-like sprigs, or big flowers first. If you have some different types of sprigs that lay flat on the branches, you can group a few coordinating ones together to make them fuller. You’ll want to start on the top or bottom again, adding each one to your tree in a zig zag pattern, so they have more equal spacing between one another.

Step 5: Now it’s time to add your accent ornaments. Continue adding these in a zig-zag pattern, from top to bottom.

Step 6: Add your finishing touches. Whether it be a star, an angel, or whatever else you like at the top of your tree – put it up and wrap a skirt around the base.

Additional Tips:

  • Use coordinating colours for your tree, without using too many different styles of decorations. Perhaps 12 is a good number for the amount of different ornament styles.
  • You can add some keepsake or personal ornaments, but if you want to keep a cohesive look, you can decorate a smaller tree for these ones.
  • Before you hang your lights, plug them in to make sure they are all working. As you put them on the tree, keeping them lit will also help you hang them evenly.
  • You don’t have to use an actual tree skirt that is store-bought. You can use large rolls sheer ribbon…faux fur throws…or even burlap! Get creative with this part.
  • Add a light-timer or even a light-dimmer to your lights to control the intensity of them throughout the day.

Thanks for the Weird Spelling of My Name, Mom!

This one is for the Braedyns, Cyndees, Izobels and Mykels. You know who you are. You have a name that SOUNDS like it should be easy to spell, but your creative parents decided to be all artsy and take your “Jason” or “Madison” and turn them into the much more fancy “Jayceson” and “Maddisyn”.

They meant well, really they did.

As I am sure you already know, your name has never EVER turned up on the side of a coke can. Or on notebook covers, back to school pencils, or door tags that say “David’s Room.” No where to be seen!

Now, my name is Julie, not “Juley”, “Jewleigh” or “Julee”. I have never had this problem. My name was EVERYWHERE on stuff, especially in the 1980’s when it seemed like there were a TON of “Julies” around. This problem has never really cross my path.

Recently, someone in our office hosted a birthday party for a friend and when she was telling us about the fun time everyone had, she said that she had taken some of our newest Christmas ornaments and had each person’s name engraved on one, as a party favour for each guest. It was exceptionally well received by one woman in attendance, who exclaimed “My name is NEVER on any of these things! THANK YOU!!!!!”

Alyshia, another member of our Things Engraved staff, said she FEELS her pain and had the same experience, with her name being spelled differently than the more traditional version, being “Alicia”.

We at Things Engraved are all FOR creativity, so we say, embrace your unique spelling, and shout it out to the world how much you love being uncommon. AND just get your uniqueness engraved onto whatever you want! Whether it be something our store, or something you already have (we offer carry-in engraving as well), you can have YOUR name, spelled YOUR way, on just about anything you wish (as long as we can fit it into the engraver!)

If you are already a “Sue”, “John”, “Sarah” or “Andrew”, then I am sure there is a person in your life that will be THRILLED to receive a gift with their unique name engraved right there for all the world to see! We can help you choose exactly the right thing. And we will be happy to spell their names however you wish.

Here are a few great gifts, just waiting for a unique name!
