Sharon Celebrates 25 Years with Things Engraved

We would like to Recognize Sharon Brayton, who is celebrating 25 Years of working at Things Engraved this month. Sharon started part time as an employee of Sears Keys and Engraved Gifts Department located in Sears at 1000 Island Mall in Brockville in August 1990!   Shortly after she started, there was an opening for store manager and Sharon applied and got the job. As the new manager, Sharon was very successful at taking over the location and making it work.

In 2003, the company decided to depart from Sears, at this location, and moved to a kiosk in the same mall, and our store name would now change to Things Engraved. Sharon was excited about the move, instead of being in Sears, she would be right in the middle of everything! She was looking so forward getting a brand new bigger store, and of course a larger selection of product to fill it.

Sharon is in this location to this day. If you walk by our kiosk you can see her, with her big smile, ready to welcome you and help you in selecting that special gift and engraving it. Sharon is always up for the challenge! Over the years, she has more than satisfied her customers with her engraving accomplishments, let alone her unique engraving of swords, daggers, pool cues and her most recent success was a pair of deer antlers. She’s always ready to engrave those hard-to engrave gifts for customers!

My favourite time of year is Christmas! I love the hustle and bustle of it all. I love making customers happy and seeing them with a smile really seals the deal for me!

Over the years, Sharon has grown strong relationships with employees who have moved on and customers, who still drop by and say hello. She comments she never wants to retire, she loves what she is doing and even misses the store when she goes on vacation!

We thank Sharon for her many years of service and hope there is many more to come!

The Stantec Cool Commute Challenge

More and more, people are concerned about environmental sustainability, strong communities, and individual health. You could easily argue that those three things often go hand in hand. People are looking for ways in their everyday life to improve overall health outcomes, as are many companies in the business community.

Recently, we were tasked with creating a large group of trophy plates for the Stantec Cool Commute Challenge. There were some very interesting awards on those plaques, and they really peaked our interest…we wanted to know MORE about this event.

Stantec Cool Commute Challenge

Stantec is a global design firm. Founded in Edmonton in 1954, Stantec now employs more than 15,000 people in more than 250 offices. To get the scoop on Stantec’s Cool Commute Challenge, we contacted Melissa Peneycad, associate, sustainable development, in Stantec’s Toronto office.

The Stantec Cool Commute Challenge is an annual, friendly inter-office competition which encourages employees to use more sustainable modes of transportation such as cycling, walking, transit, carpooling, or telecommuting, instead of single-occupancy driving. It helps to improve participants’ health while reducing their transportation costs and greenhouse gas emissions. The month-long challenge is held in June. It began in 2007 and now attracts more than 2000 participants each year from all across Stantec’s offices. By participating in the Cool Commute Challenge, our team members not only reduce their environmental footprint, they can also simultaneously save money, get some great exercise, avoid the stress of gridlock, and connect with coworkers across the Company, all while having fun.”

Trophies, called “Commuties” (which are made from old bike parts in the shape of a bike) are awarded to offices for highest participation rates, and points per employee for biking, walking, taking public transit, carpooling, and telecommuting. In 2015, 2,453 Stantec employees participated in the Challenge across 137 offices in Canada and the United States. More than 1,000,000 sustainably traveled kilometers were logged (approx. 640,000 miles) during the Challenge. The Challenge runs annually, during the month of June

While looking for information about this event, we ran across an article that mentioned Stantec as having been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers, for 4 years in a row! Clearly this event, along with other activities in many communities, shows this company’s commitment to something they value strongly. Namely, “design with community in mind.”

Congratulations to Stantec for offering their employees a fun and important event. And good luck to everyone participating in the next Cool Commute Challenge!

Rona Celebrates 25 Years with Things Engraved

We want to recognize Rona Frasson, who is celebrating 25 years of working at Things Engraved this month.  Rona has always worked at the head office in Kitchener Ontario.  When she started with us, the company was focused on key cutting and of course, engraving.  She told us about the days when engraving used to be done by hand!  Then the company expanded to include shoe repair and eventually knife sales too.  She says when she started she worked in reception and then moved around between the IT department, leasing department, and finally, she moved to the marketing department.  She provides direct support for all the marketing communications for Things Engraved and trust me, after being here for 25 years, she’s in the know about most things.  If anyone around head office has a procedural question, Rona is the person to ask!  She is also a key liaison person between our stores and head office providing stores with our HQ communications.  Rona also heads up our Customer Service department and provides exceptional service to any of our customers who experience challenges in any of our stores or online.

The thing I like most about working here is definitely the people;  I really like the people I work with; they’re a good bunch.

Rona is always friendly and I don’t think she ever has “bad days” because she is always chipper and happy.  Even though Rona keeps busy with many things here, she is always willing to help.  If you need help stuffing envelops, proof-reading, slotting mail, or QCing product; you can rely on Rona!  Dependable, helpful, and super friendly, that’s our Rona!

Things Engraved, as a company, is lucky to have such a dedicated employee and for that we wish to thank Rona for her years of service… with many more to come!
