Every year my family has a tradition of gathering at my parent’s house to decorate the Christmas tree. We’ve collected ornaments from family trips all over the world, as well as from special milestones. It’s always a fun evening of sharing memories from certain trips as we unpack the ornaments. Everyone in my family has their favourite Christmas ornament that brings a happy memory to mind. Mine is my “Baby’s 1st Christmas” ornament that I received when I was almost a teenager. Yes, a teenager.
Every year, while unpacking & hanging the ornaments there were always two “Baby’s 1st Christmas” ornaments to hang. I had always assumed one was mine and one was my brother’s. Until the year I noticed the dates on the ornaments were both the same! My brother had two “Baby’s 1st Christmas” ornaments and I didn’t have any. I had never paid attention to the dates on the ornaments since I had always assumed one was mine. My parents explained I didn’t have a “Baby’s 1st Christmas” ornament because we were living far away from our extended family at that time. My brother had received his ornaments as gifts from relatives before we had moved.
That year for Christmas, I received my very own “Baby’s 1st Christmas” ornament from my parents with my name and the correct year engraved. It has since become my favourite Christmas ornament and brings the fond memory of receiving it as a teenager. Now when my brother and I hang our “Baby’s 1st Christmas” ornaments on the tree, we both cherish the ornaments and the thoughtful people who gave them to us regardless of what age we received it!
Here are a few “Baby’s 1st Christmas” ornaments ready to be engraved (with any year!):
